Amazing Spider-Man Breaks Box Office Record for Tuesday Opening

The Amazing Spider-Man netted an impressive $35 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices on its first day in theaters, breaking a record for a Tuesday opening.

The previous record was held by the first Transformers flick, which opened on July 3rd, 2007 and brought in $27.8 million. Sony Pictures Entertainment, Spider-mans distributor, is predicting domestic ticket sales of $110 million to $120 million from Tuesday through Sunday.

Some, like Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com Box Office, are predicting higher numbers, noting that Transformers raked in $146 million during its first six days in theaters. Sony spent about $215 million to make The Amazing Spider-Man. Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, the film is a reboot of sorts of the most recent, Tobey Maguire-led Spidey franchise, which grossed about $2.5 billion at global box offices over the course of three movies, starting with 2002s Spider-Man.

If by chance The Amazing Spider-Man does just as well over three flicks, it wouldnt be the only similarity between the two franchises. Just ask Peter Travers.
