Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth film in the smash franchise, topped the U.S. box office during its opening weekend, raking in an estimated $46 million.
The animated flick, which follows a cast of prehistoric animals voiced by Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Jennifer Lopez, knocked off last weeks box office victor, The Amazing Spider-Man, which came in second after bringing in $35 million this weekend.
On the whole, the new Spidey film has brought in $201 million in just two weeks, plus another $320 million from foreign markets, bringing its worldwide sales numbers to $521 million.
When The Amazing Spider-Man opened July 3, it took in an impressive $35 million, breaking the previous record for a Tuesday opening set in 2007 by the first Transformers, which scored $27.8 million.
Rounding out the rest of the top five at the box office this weekend were Ted, the first film from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane (who also voices the foul-mouthed stuffed bear that befriends star Mark Wahlberg), followed by Pixars latest, Brave, which netted $10.7 million, and Magic Mike, the male stripper comedy starring Channing Tatum, which brought in $9 million.
