Clueless: The Musical Moves Forward With Rock of Ages Director

The rumored Clueless: The Musical is finally moving forward officially. Filmmaker Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original movie, confirmed the news to Entertainment Tonight.

She also confirmed that Kristin Hanggi, who directed the Broadway production Rock of Ages from 2009 through 2015, would be leading this production and that the producer would be Dodger Theatricals, whose credits include Jersey Boys, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Into the Woods.

Ive written what they call the book, and its a jukebox musical, she said. The filmmaker would not reveal which hits would be included in the production, but for the sake of speculation its worth noting that the original 1995 films soundtrack skewed towards alt-rock with selections by Cracker, Luscious Jackson, Radiohead, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Counting Crows, Coolio and Beastie Boys. The album was reissued on vinyl earlier this year.

Her biggest worry about the show right now, it seems, is who would act in it. Well casting thats like going to be like the main problem, she said. The original film starred Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd and Donald Faison, among others. Dash and Faison later reprised their roles when the show was adapted into a TV series, which ran for three seasons, until it was canceled in 1999. For that adaptation, Rachel Blanchard who has since appeared in Snakes on a Plane and Road Trip starred as Silverstones Cher Horowitz role.

Everything goes so slowly, and I go, Wow this takes a long time,' Heckerling said of the adaptation. I thought movies took a long time. Subsequently, she could not estimate a premiere date. Its hard to know with Broadway when things will happen, she said.

Last July, before the musical was even confirmed, Heckerling started rumors that pop stars were considering appearing as Cher in the musical. Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death, she said at the time, while acknowledging that Perrys intense schedule could create a conflict. Then she added, Maybe Iggy [Azalea] would do it!
