The Flaming Lips are never conventional: with a new album on the way, the Oklahoma rockers stopped by the Late Show With David Letterman last night to play the title track from The Terror in a performance that raised a lot of questions. For example: What is Wayne Coyne standing on? And whats with the strands coming off the mobile thing in front of the drum set? And why are they connected to whatever Coyne is cradling in his arms?
Flaming Lips Get Bloody and Weird in Ashes in the Air
Whatever the answers (if there are answers, apart from chalking it up to a new stage set), the band chugged through the pulsing song, powered by relentless drums, glowering synthesizers and a churning guitar break, while Coyne crooned vocals layered in reverb. The Terror is due out April 16th.
