Quentin Tarantino Talks Audience Manipulation In Exclusive Clip


Sin Citydirector Robert Rodriguez recently launched the El Rey Network, a channel aimed at cinema-loving, English-speaking Latinos. In addition to airing classic TV shows like The X-Files and Starsky & Hutch, El Rey also provides original programming, like a TV series based on Rodriguezs own From Dusk Till Dawn and a Q&A program called The Directors Chairwhere Rodriguez talks movies with some of the biggest directors in the game. Sitting down in The Directors Chairin August: The helmers good buddy Quentin Tarantino.

In this exclusive clip from the upcoming episode, QT talks about his inimitable ability to place himself in the mind of his audience. Audiences didnt even realize how attuned they had got to contrivances of movies, because they were so used to it, Tarantino tells Rodriguez. So you could use that against them. You could leave the bread crumbs that would indicate you were gonna go the way all the other films had gone, then all of a sudden you make a quick left turn, and theyre not prepared for that.

The conversation with Tarantino will take place over the course of two episodes: Volume 1 (naturally, given Kill Bill) airs Wednesday, August 13th at 9 p.m. EST and Volume 2 follows two weeks later on August 27th. In their discussions, Tarantino and Rodriguez tackle everything from screenwriting and cinematography to influences like Kung Fu and spaghetti westerns. For film fans, this will no doubt provide unique insight into two of this generations most groundbreaking filmmakers.

Tarantino and Rodriguez have a long history of collaboration stretching back two decades: QT had significant acting roles in Rodriguezs star-making Desperadoand the campy vampire flick From Dusk Till Dawn. Rodriguez also directed the scenes in Pulp Fictionwhen Tarantino was in front of the camera as the Jimmy character; Tarantino returned that favor by providing a directorial cameo in Sin City. In 2007, the pair hooked up for the horror omnibus Grindhouse.
