Disneyhas decided not to move forward with Tron 3, a proposed third installment of the popular sci-fi franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to the project say the film was never officially greenlit, though prep work had already begun.
Joseph Kosinski, director of 2010s Tron: Legacy, previously signed on to helm the film, with co-stars Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund both set to reprise their roles. Production was planned to begin this fall, with Vancouver cited as a possible location. The change in plans comes as a shock for financial reasons, asTron: Legacy was a massive hit for Disney and grossed $400 million worldwide.
The original 1982 Tron starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer transported to and trapped inside the software landscape of a computer. Though only a modest box office success in its time, the film found acclaim for its innovative visual style and technical elements, earning Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Sound.
In the following decades, Tronbuilt a reputation as a cult classic. Legacy which featured an expansive, orchestral-electronic scorefrom Daft Punk starred Hedlund as the son of Bridges character, who enters the Grid in a quest to find his father.
Disney has loaded its upcoming release calendar with live-action films, including adaptations of animated titles like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast. However, the companys latest live-action project, Brad Birds Tomorrowland, has earned disappointing box office numbers and mixed reviews. Peter Travers called the film a noble failure in his Rolling Stonewrite-up, adding that its written and directed with such open-hearted optimism that you cheer it on even as it stumbles.
