The highly anticipated documentary Kurt Cobain: About A Son had its world premiere last night at Torontos Cumberland Theatre, leading a slew of music-centric films slated to debut at the Toronto Film Festival later this week. Director AJ Schnack culled 25 hours of audiotaped interviews conducted by writer Michael Azerrad for his 1993 book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana; the effect is that Cobain narrates his own story.
The soundtrack, curated by Seattle musician/producer (and Nirvana collaborator) Steve Fisk and Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, compiles music that served as inspiration for the singer; no Nirvana music is included, which may upset some fans. But the candid conversations with Azerrad that make up the bulk of the film offer a nice glimpse of Cobains humor and foresight. I hope people get a sense of him that they havent before, Schnack said before the screening.
