Wolverine is one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel universe but his days are numbered. The X-Man legend, whos now over a century old in the comic timeline, will be killed off by the franchise this September in a four-issue mini-series titledDeath of Wolverine. WriterCharles Soule (She-Hulk,Inhuman), illustrator Steve McNiven (Wolverine,Amazing Spider-Man)and Marvel executive editor Michael Marts tease the brooding story arc ina new interview withEntertainment Weekly.
Wolverine Through the Years Pictures
For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, hes been the eternal victor, Marts says. He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character whos been around for 100 years?
Though the circumstances of the characters death are unclear, Marts says the arc was approached from a standpoint of finality, of closure. The road to Wolverines demise will be chronicled this summer in the story arc3 Months to Die, which finds the character losing his mutant healing factor the very power that has kept him alive throughout the years, despite the various fatal injuries hes suffered.
Hes reflecting on his own life as hes reflecting on his own death, says Soule of the grim storyline. We wanted to have the reader do that at the same time. In each issue, were focusing on a different aspect, or a different quintessential WolverineI hope that when people finish it, theyll feel like he died in a way that was true to him.
Wolverines death wont be easily shaken the effects will radiate throughout the Marvel universe in future storylines. Youre gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine, says Marts. That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. Weve got a lot of things in the works already.
The firstDeath of Wolverineissue will hit stores on September 3rd; the final issue will arrive on September 24th.
